Welcome to the Website of the German Cattle Breeders´ Federation
The German Cattle Breeders´ Federation is the umbrella organization of organized cattle breeding in Germany and comprises all breeding organizations, organizations for artificial insemination, nearly all embryo transfer institutions, the milk recording organizations and the data centre, Vereinigte Informationssysteme Tierhaltung w.V. - so the entire organized cattle breeding in Germany. We represent the interests of the cattle breeding industry on national and international level. We actively invest our expertise concerning current issues and legislations in dialogue with politics, public administration and other umbrella organizations within the agricultural sector.
The ordinary members of the German Cattle Breeders’ Federation are:
- German Holstein Association
Deutscher Holstein Verband e. V. (DHV)
- Federation of Southern German Cattle Breeding and AI Organizations
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Süddeutscher Rinderzucht- und Besamungsorganisationen e.V. (ASR)
- German Beef Cattle Breeders´ Federation
Bundesverband Deutscher Fleischrinderzüchter und -halter e. V. (BDF)
- German Assoziation for Performance and Quality Testing
Deutscher Verband für Leistungs- und Qualitätsprüfungen e. V. (DLQ)
The main areas of the German Cattle Breeders´ Federation are:
The German Cattle Breeders´ Federation coordinates the necessary activities of breeding, organized in the umbrella organizations German Holstein Association (DHV), Federation of Southern German Cattle Breeding and AI Organizations (ASR) and the German Beef Cattle Breeders´ Federation (BDF). We are charged with the elaboration of methods for the consideration of functional traits in cattle breeding.
Breeding value estimation
Breeding value estimation in Germany is under state control. Our working groups contribute to the enhancement of breeding value estimation for cattle and to the implementation of national and EU-regulations as well as INTERBULL-recommendations. Under orders from the breeding organizations the data centre, Vereinigte Informationssysteme Tierhaltung w.V. (vit), carries out the nationwide breeding value estimation.
Artificial insemination and Biotechnology
In the fields of artificial insemination and embryo transfer uniform hygiene and quality standards must be developed and implemented on national and EU level. Increasing international trade requires manifold activities to harmonize regulations in the fields of hygiene and breeding. We also work on research and development in the field of genome analysis.
Quality and Performance Testing
The German Association for Performance and Quality Testing (DLQ) is our qualified partner in this area. DLQ is representing the umbrella organization of all 12 regional German milk recording organizations, two associations of raw milk testing and vit (IT-solutions for animal production). German dairy farmers have been organized in milk recording associations in order to take part in milk testing (DHI) for more than 100 years. Currently the milk of more than 3,7 million cows (more than 87% of all dairy cows) from roughly 51,000 farms is tested nationwide. This worldwide second largest system of nationally organized milk recording bases on independent milk testing laboratories and produce essential data for the herd management in case of animal health and performance. The genetic evaluation is also based on data from milk recording, especially for breeding aligned on animal health and fertility.
The German Cattle Breeders´ Federation has collaborated in the development of a unique numbering system in all Federal States, the development of identification certificates and the Central Data Bank (HIT) for all cattle kept in Germany and is involved in the enhancement of conventional cattle identification (ISO) and electronic tagging methods.
The improvement of animal welfare is an important task of our work. In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, other umbrella organizations in the agricultural area and several official research institutes we work on the evaluation of methods and improvement of animal welfare.
The German Cattle Breeders´ Federation is concerned with actual questions of animal health. Guidelines and regulations for disease control are discussed and elaborated together with the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Import and export regulations for breeding animals and semen are regularly harmonized among the departments.
The German Cattle Breeders´ Federation supports the worldwide exportation of German cattle genetics by elaboration of improved export conditions. The participation in fairs and exhibitions abroad is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture as well as the invitation of foreign delegations and the organization of promotion events in countries of special interest.
In Brussels we represent the interests of German cattle breeding via the `Working Group on Breeding Cattle` within the Committee of Agricultural Organizations in the European Union (COPA/COGECA) and, since 1 July 2001, via an own office of the German Animal Breeders` Federation (ADT). On international level the German Cattle Breeders´ Federation contributes to the activities of the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) and its subdivision INTERBULL. In addition the German Cattle Breeders´ Federation is part of the Working Group of European Veterinaries, the European Association for Animal Production, the International Federation for Animal Breeding (IFAB) and the Farm Animal Industrial Platform (FAIP). In cooperation with the ADT Projekt GmbH the German Cattle Breeders´ Federation is considerably involved in the development of cattle breeding in Middle and Eastern Europe.
